Bear resistant garbage cans—

The only proven way

to reduce bear nuisance incidents

A professor at Rutgers University has shown in an in-depth study that when non-lethal programs are used to control bears, (such as proper garbage storage) nuisance incidents drop significantly. And thanks to BEAR Group volunteers—who spearheaded garbage control in New Jersey—a bear-resistant trash can is now available.

The cans have a screw-top lid, which bears are unable to open. Once bears learn they can’t open the can, they move on, because they no longer see your garbage as a food source. In addition, when bears consume only natural food, their reproductive rate decreases.

Some simple bearproofing tips:

  1. •Keep your garbage indoors until just prior to pickup. On garbage day, place trash in a bear-resistant can and place it by the curb.

  2. •If you must put garbage outdoors prior to pickup, do NOT store it  in a garage or shed. Instead, place trash in a bear-resistant trash can and chain the can to a tree or post.

  3. •Keep your deck, yard and grill clean of all food sources.

  4. •Electric fencing will discourage bears from entering your yard and must be used to protect companion animals living outdoors.

  5. •Suspend your bird feeders at least 12 feet off the ground from a line strung between trees.

Until garbage is controlled, they can shoot half the bears in our parks.

And there will still be complaints.

Vernon, NJ—Unsuccessful bear cannot open our Critter Can™

Testimonials:

Just to let you know, the can is bear proof. This morning we were awakened by a loud noise. My wife and I went to the back door and there was this huge bear trying to open the can. He was over 500 lbs in my estimate, but he could not unscrew it or collapse it. He tried for no more then 5 minutes and left. If this big bear couldn't get the can open, I think the can is truly bear proof.

My husband and I purchased two bear proof cans earlier this year. They were the least expensive and no bear has been able to get into it, although they tried. These cans are absolutely fantastic. We liked them so much, we purchased a third this past summer. There has been minimal if no bear sightings since we've been using them. We never thought we’d be so excited over a garbage container!  These bear proof cans work. We would recommend them to anyone looking for bear proof cans. Thanks again.
