background:

The Black Bear Feeding Ban is the strongest weapon we have in our fight against black bear trophy hunting, because when we obey the law and bearproof our homes, we lower black bear nuisance complaints. And that is exactly why the Division of Fish & Wildlife does not enforce this law—because the way the Division manipulates support for bear hunting is by inflating nuisance complaint statistics.

Recently in Vernon, NJ, a resident lured a young bear into his garage with trash. The resident then called the police, reported a home entry, and demanded the bear be killed. The police, accompanied by Fish & Wildlife officers, readily complied—and shot the bear to death

in front of horrified neighbors.

And even though this is the third time this same resident has had a bear killed on his property, the Division did not enforce the Black Bear Feeding Ban.

Why do incidents like this continue to happen?  Because

when the Division ignores the feeding ban they strategically create unwanted bear incidents. These incidents are then used, not only to inflate “nuisance” complaints, but also to promote fear of bears and to mislead the public about population. The truth is, there are not too many bears, there are just too many public officials who are deliberately violating the Black Bear Feeding Ban.

Make no mistake: The Division of Fish & Wildlife wants non-lethal black bear management to fail...because if it does, they are one step closer  to a trophy hunt. And they think that by sabotaging the Black Bear Feeding Ban  and publicly punishing bears for peoples’ mistakes—that they will get their trophy hunt.

Please don’t let that happen.

Because of the Division’s illegal tactics, we will be launching an aggressive campaign to thwart any further damage they may do. With your support, we will make New Jersey aware of how they are using our wildlife as pawns in their lust for bloodsports. We will hold their feet to the fire, and see that the law is enforced.

And we will continue to advocate for the lives of these gentle giants.

Will you help us? Will you help the bears?

Non lethal bear management backed by science

Dr. Edward Tavss, PhD, of Rutgers University researched the effectiveness of hunting vs. a non-violent approach (public education and bearproof containers) to managing bears. His findings show that hunting shows ZERO effect in reducing bear complaints. In fact, EVERY site he evaluated where hunting was used, complaints about bears increased. However, at EVERY site where a non-lethal approach was used, complaints dropped significantly.

Breaking the Law...

It’s how the Division of Fish & Wildlife

plans to hunt them again.

The Black Bear Feeding Ban keeps bears

out of trouble by forcing residents to bearproof.

And that’s exactly why the Division of Fish & Wildlife refuses to enforce this law.

The Black Bear Feeding Ban (N.J.S.A. 23:2A-14) makes it illegal to feed bears—intentionally or by failure to bearproof our garbage. But the Division of Fish & Wildlife won’t enforce this law. Instead, they wait for bears to get into trouble—then kill them—and use the bogus statistics to drum up support for a trophy hunt.

Why? Because the Division exists to regulate game hunting and to serve hunters’ interests. They have no plan to peacefully manage bears. What they have is an agenda—to hunt them—for trophies, for revenue, and for pleasure.

But you can stop them. Please support us today.
